In the surrondings of colours and creativity
With a deep passion for colours, materials, and the way they shape our everyday environments, designer Sarah Gottlieb brings a uniquely human approach to her work. Her curiosity about how people think, feel, and connect with the world around them is what inspired her to launch The Sound of Colour podcast – a creative exploration of design, emotion, and sensory experience.
Naturally social and endlessly inspired by stories and perspectives, Sarah’s work is all about transforming both public and private spaces into environments that feel personal, timeless, and full of soul. Her designs invite connection, spark emotion, and reflect a love for beauty that’s both intentional and deeply lived.
Sarah’s home has been photographed by Karen Rosetzsky.
Colours mean everything to me. They influence mood, energy, and the way we experience a space or an object. I see them as tools for storytelling – whether through design, interiors, or art.

Colour at the core
For Sarah Gottlieb, colour is everything. It shapes mood, influences energy, and defines how we experience both objects and spaces. To her, colour is more than aesthetic – it's a storytelling tool, woven through design, interiors, and art alike.
In her work, colour is never an afterthought. It sits at the centre of every creative decision. Sarah is constantly attuned to how colours respond to light, materials, and emotion – whether she’s developing a concept for a client or simply repainting her own kitchen. For her, colour isn't just a detail; it’s the emotion that gives form its meaning.
Sarah's advice – Start small
We asked Sarah what her advice to incorporate colours into your home would be. Her answer to this was to start small by introducing colour through accessories, a bold statement piece, or even by painting the ceiling. Live with it. Notice how it makes you feel. Let the space evolve naturally from there. Colour isn’t just decoration – it’s an experience. Something to be savoured, like a warm hug or a slice of festive cake.

Sarah's three favourites
When selecting colours, Sarah Gottlieb gravitated toward Rosehip, Ruby, and Pomelo – each chosen not just for their visual appeal, but for the emotion they carry.
Rosehip struck the perfect balance. To Sarah, it feels like the warmth of a home-cooked meal – comforting, grounding, and deeply familiar – yet with a splash of boldness. It’s soft and strong all at once, like slipping on red lipstick and instantly feeling ready to take on the world. That kind of duality speaks to her.
Ruby, on the other hand, is her “party girl.” It captures everything she loves about pink: playful, fearless, and full of joy. It’s the kind of colour that lifts her mood on grey days and encourages a carefree, wholehearted approach to life. That same spirit is why she chose a bubblegum pink for her hallway – a bold reminder to have fun and let go of expectations.
Then there’s Pomelo – sunny, zesty, and a little unexpected. It channels Sarah’s love of good food, vibrant energy, and the joy of being surrounded by the people she cares about. Together, these three shades form a palette that reflects Sarah’s approach to both life and design: emotional, joyful, and endlessly curious.
Rosehip has that perfect balance I love – it carries the warmth of a home cooked meal, something comforting and grounding, but also has a splash of boldness to it. Like putting on red lipstick and feeling ready to conquer the world. It’s both soft and strong, and that duality really resonates with me.
Sarah describes her home as a reflection of her personality – a brain that works like a popcorn machine, constantly popping out ideas. Some turns out perfect, fluffy popcorn, while others stay half-popped kernels that you wish had made it. That’s exactly the imperfection that she loves and keep sacred in her and her family’s home – it's ever-changing, full of character, and completely theirs.
My home is for me and my family, and we fill it with what we like and what we need. That in itself becomes the personal style – cozy, a bit bonkers, and delightfully random.
Colours as a mood
For Sarah Gottlieb, the best homes are deeply personal. That’s why her design process always begins with self-reflection—tuning into the mood she wants to create and how she wants a space to feel. Once that emotional foundation is clear, she chooses colours that personally resonate with that feeling.
To Sarah, mood is everything. It guides every design decision, especially when it comes to colour. Her philosophy is simple but powerful: your home is for you. You're the one living in it every day, so the colours you choose should speak to you – evoking the emotions and atmosphere you want to come home to. It's all about creating a space that feels not only beautiful, but genuinely yours.
