For the 17th session of Colour Class, we explore a charming apartment in the historic part of Amager, Copenhagen, filled with natural light and crafted from the finest materials. This home belongs to fashion designer Mathilde Prins, better known as @myrainbowfeeling, her husband Mikkel, and their two young sons.

The goal was to design a space that captures the family’s creativity, playful use of colour, and carefree approach to life. This time, we take a closer look at their small kitchen. The brief was simple yet imaginative: “What would Pippi Longstocking’s home look like if she lived in 2024 with two children and a husband?

Join us in this edition of Colour Class as we discover how bold, playful choices can blend seamlessly with a sophisticated home, proving that embracing your inner child can still result in a balanced and grown-up space.

What we learned this time is that even if a room is small, it can still have a big personality.

Location: In the old part of Amager, we find this beautiful, classic apartment with stunning natural light, built using the finest materials. This is the home of fashion designer Mathilde Prins, better known as @myrainbowfeeling, her husband Mikkel, and their two young sons.

Mission: The task was to create a home for this young family that reflects their immense creativity, playful love of colour, and a certain dose of a happy-go-lucky attitude to life. In many ways, the brief was: "What would Pippi Longstocking’s home look like if she had grown up, was living in 2024 with two children and a husband on Amager?” This time, we take a closer look at their small kitchen.

Colours: In many ways, the flat is relatively spacious for a classic Copenhagen apartment, but to be fair, the kitchen isn’t large. However, that didn’t mean there weren’t high expectations for it. Mikkel is a chef, so this is a space designed to be used.

The kitchen faces the courtyard, meaning it doesn’t get much natural light. This was why we decided to paint all the surfaces in the same creamy white as the large open-plan living area just beyond the door. With that neutral base in place, it was time to infuse the room with the personality that matches this vibrant family.

The choice was to have the new kitchen units spray-painted in a dark, dusty purple, which instantly made the space feel unique and personal. On top of that, Mikkel and Mathilde found a white worktop with a colourful confetti pattern – it couldn’t be more "them."

Using this as a foundation, Mathilde styled the kitchen in her own inimitable way: adding Montana’s Panton Wire in Monarch, creating a cosy dining nook with a bold yellow tabletop, and filling the red shelf with her impressive collection of mugs. Bit by bit – with pops of yellow, pink, and purple – she made it their kitchen.

What we learned this time is that even if a room is small, it can still have a big personality.
