Paradigm is the new name for Erik Rasmussen’s iconic modular sofa from 1969 – a piece that, at the time, introduced a paradigm shift in modern interior design. The name Paradigm looks back to this groundbreaking beginning – and forward to a new era of timeless, adaptable comfort.

Montana is a buy for life product that is known to be passed on from generation to generation. However, we have your back in the unlikely case your purchase is flawed.
Colours and textiles
Paradigm is is available in a well assorted colour card with textiles from Kvadrat and Gabriel. Covers can be purchased loosely and can be changed according to your needs.
It is possible to order Paradigm in custom textiles upon request. Textiles from established suppliers (e.g. Kvadrat, Gabriel) must be checked and tested. Approved textiles will be matched to the existing Paradigm price groups.

As part of the sofa’s relaunch, each Paradigm module now features a removable cover, securely fastened underneath with Velcro. This design allows for quick and convenient removal for dry-cleaning or replacement. Covers can be ordered individually per module, offering flexibility and personalisation to suit your needs.
This update promotes longevity and sustainability, ensuring Paradigm is designed to evolve with you – a sofa built for flexibility, modern living, and lasting appeal. Paradigm is available in a carefully curated selection of colours, with textiles from Kvadrat and Gabriel. Covers can be purchased separately and changed as needed, making it easy to refresh your sofa and extend its lifespan.
Linking brackets and legs
All Paradigm modules are equipped with connectors, allowing for easy assembly and secure placement. They can also be effortlessly detached for reconfiguration. Paradigm comes with 2.5 cm legs in black-stained wood as standard. All preconfigured layouts include these 2.5 cm legs. A 5 cm leg option is available for purchase separately and can be easily retrofitted.
Construction and technical features
Materials
Paradigm is built with HR (High Resilience) polyurethane foam on a PEFC-certified chipboard frame. The foam is fixed to the wooden frame. This ensures that it cannot shift during handling or use. Paradigm is manufactured in Lithuania, Europe, and holds the EU Ecolabel (applicable only to sofas with covers made from EU Ecolabel-certified textiles).
Power dot
Paradigm can be ordered with a powerdot, suitable for various countries and available in black. The powerdot is integrated into the front armrest of corner modules and includes a power outlet and a USB-C socket. Paradigm modules are delivered prepared for on-site installation of the powerdot by the customer. The powerdot is packaged separately. The powerdot is easily mounted and dismounted when replacing textile covers.
Fire-resistant
Paradigm is available in a special fire-resistant edition, featuring fire-resistant (FR) foam. Custom FR textiles can be selected to create a fully fire-resistant compliant Paradigm edition. Please note that Paradigm fire-resistant does not carry the EU Ecolabel.

Erik Rasmussen (1930–1984)
Architect Erik Rasmussen (1930–1984) designed the sofa for Paustian in 1969 while working as a graphic designer at the company. Paustian had requested a modular, sculptural, and minimalist piece where form and textile could truly take center stage.
Erik Rasmussen responded with the sofa’s distinctive rounded seat and backrest. Today, his design is celebrated for its sculptural relationship to space, leaving a lasting impact on modern Scandinavian design. His original modular sofa now lives on as Paradigm, a future-proof system that continues his visionary legacy while aligning with Montana Furniture’s commitment to thoughtful, sustainable design.
