Colour Class #9Challenging the definition of a Nordic home

In the ninth instalment of our Colour Class series, we visit the lively and light-filled home of Molly and Benjamin, who reside with their two daughters in a charming corner apartment on Amager. This classic flat, rich with beautiful details, serves as the perfect canvas for our latest project.

Our objective was to craft a cosy and bright living room that not only supports family life and creativity but also showcases the vibrant patterns of Josef Frank.

In this session, we delve into how a thoughtfully chosen palette of muted tones can create a harmonious and serene environment, allowing the colourful designs to shine without overwhelming the space. Join us as we transform this living area into a welcoming haven that balances functionality with artistic expression.

What’s fascinating about this room is that there isn’t a single statement piece demanding our attention. Instead, the soft colours throughout make the entire room a collective statement.

Location: In a central corner apartment on Amager, filled with light and life, Molly and Benjamin live with their two daughters in a classic flat adorned with beautiful details.

Mission: To create a cosy and bright living room that accommodates family life and creativity, and provides visual space for the classic colourful patterns of Josef Frank.

Colours: This beautiful living room not only occupies a corner but also faces a square, with no close neighbours, making it full of light even when the sun isn't shining. This unique setting creates a special atmosphere as if you are both indoors and outdoors. At the same time, it is the focal point for an active and creative family, needing to accommodate everything from television and relaxation to a gathering spot and a creative space. Add a love for Josef Frank’s beautiful patterns into the mix, and you have a room that could quickly become chaotic.

Instead, the focus is on a plethora of muted colours that weave together, creating a calm picture. The cream woodwork and soft yellow ceiling provide a good base for the room. At one end, an inbuilt cabinet is painted in a cosy "Tea with Milk" colour, blending warmly with the walls and ceiling. At the other end, all the creative tools are neatly stored in a Montana cabinet with a custom-made stainless-steel tabletop.

Here, Benjamin works and paints fantastic Warhammer figures while life unfolds around him.

In the centre of the otherwise airy room, two large sofas ground the space: one in green velvet and one in leather, adorned with colourful cushions featuring Josef Frank's patterns, popping amidst the many yellow and green tones filling the room.

What’s fascinating about this room is that there isn’t a single statement piece demanding our attention. Instead, the soft colours throughout make the entire room a collective statement.

The lesson here is that you don't have to sacrifice colour or paint everything white to achieve a bright Nordic home.
